Earl Grey

Charles Grey was born on November 23, 1789. In 1806 he was named the first Earl Grey.

His son also named Charles became the 2nd Earl Grey in 1807 upon his father’s death.

The tea Earl Grey was named after the 2nd Lord Grey. Earl Grey tea is a black tea that has added to it the oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange.

Earl Grey tea became part of the Star Trek universe as it is a favorite drink of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He has on numerous times ordered from the replicator, “Tea, Earl Grey, hot.”

The current Lord Earl Grey is Richard Fleming George Charles Grey born March 4, 1939. He is the 6th Earl Grey.

Others to hold the title were Henry George Grey, 3rd Earl Grey, Albert Henry George Grey, 4th Earl Grey, and Charles Robert Grey, 5th Earl Grey.
