The Burger Has a King

By | Dec 4, 2010

James McLamore and David Edgerton opened Insta Burger King in a suburb of Miami, Florida on December 4, 1954. The idea was loosely based on the concept developed by Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California, the original McDonalds.

By the end of the 1950s they had opened 5 regional stores and they decided to expand nationally by franchising. The Burger King Corporation was formed and franchises began opening across the country.

The Whopper is the store’s signature product. The sandwich was created in 1957 and sold for 37 cents.

Burger King was one of the first to use tie-in advertising with the movies. In 1977 they signed an agreement with George Lucas to promote the film Star Wars and issued a set of glasses that featured the characters from the film.

Burger King is the 2nd largest chain of hamburger restaurants behind McDonalds and fourth overall fast food chain behind Yums Brands (includes Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and others), McDonalds and Subway.

The company’s slogan “Have it your way” was initiated in 1973.
