Tanya Tucker

Tanya Tucker seems to have been around forever, she had her first hit record on 1972, but on October 10 2008 she just celebrates her 50th birthday. She was born on October 10, 1958 in Seminole Texas.

The young Tanya Tucker appeared in a bit part in the film Jeremiah Johnson.

It was while the family lived in Las Vegas that she came to the attention of songwriter Dolores Fuller. Fuller sent a demo tape to Bill Sherill, who was head of A&R at Columbia Records. Soon afterward she was signed to a record contract with Columbia Records. She released what many consider her signature song, Delta Dawn, in 1972. The song became a Top Ten county hit. Pop singer Helen Reddy also recorded the song, as Tucker’s was peaking on the Country Charts. Reddy’s version was a top Pop hit and was the 7th biggest song of 1973.

While other country stars were having crossover hits on the Pop Charts, Tucker’s songs didn’t have a lot of radio play on the pop station. Her biggest poop single was Lizzie and the Rainmaker, which reached Number 38. In 1978 she tried to change her style and recorded TNT. The Album’s songs were more Pop and featured a cover of Tucker in a tight fitting sexy outfit. This album would be the last big album of hers for a number of years.

The early 1980’s were dark years for Tucker. Her music career was in decline and she found herself under the control of drugs.

Then in 1986 after cleaning up her life she signed with Capitol Records. She reappeared on the charts and was one of the biggest county female acts of the late 1980s and into the 1990s.
