The Rock Hall

By | Jan 23, 2010

The first Rock and Roll induction occurred on January 23, 1986. The first group inducted were Performers: Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and the Everly Brothers. Early Influence: Jimmie Rodgers, Jimmy Yancey and Robert Johnson. Non-Performer: Alan Freed and Sam Phillips. John Hammond was inducted for Lifetime Achievement.

The qualifications for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame simple. Any group or individual who has a demonstrable influence on Rock and Roll and have had released their first record 25 years ago. There are four categories: Performers, Non-Performers, Early Influences, and since 2000, Sidemen.

After many years of selecting, planning and construction the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum opened in Cleveland, Ohio in 1995. Many cities were considered including Memphis where Sun Studios and Stax Records began, Cincinnati the home of King Records and New York. Cleveland lobbied hard for the Hall using as justification that it was the home of Alan Freed, the man who is credited with coining the term Rock and Roll.

The 2010 inductees are ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges as the artist inductees. Also being inducted as non-perfomers are David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell.

Many people have had complaints with the selection of acts in the Hall of Fame. Questions have arisen on whether Folk acts or Hip-Hop acts should be included. At times it seems as if acts that should be inducted when first eligible aren’t inducted for a number of years. Some of the artists that are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but should be are: Heart, Chicago, Moody Blues, Grand Funk as well as the song writer Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist). The list of those not inducted goes on and on.
