December

By | Dec 1, 2009

The month of December is the last month of the year. Even though decem means “ten” and it was the 10th month of the old Roman Calendar, even then it was the last month of the year. The winter period between the end of December and the 1st of March was considered monthless.

December has 31 days and the first day of December falls on the same day of the week as September.

The turquoise and zircon are the birthstones for December with Holly, narcissus, and poinsetta being the month’s flowers.

December is considered the Holiday season since Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa all fall in this month. New Year’s Eve, December 31, has become an international day to welcom the New Year and hopes that it will be a better one than the past.

December 6th is Saint Nicholas day. Saint Nicholas was originally designated by the church as the patron saint of children, thieves and pawnbrokers. Saint Nicholas is one on the many figures that have evolved into our modern Santa Claus.

On December 21, 2012 the Mayan Calendar of 1,872,000 days comes to an end. Some are calling this the end of the world, others just think of it as turning another page in time.
