Happy Birthday Charlie

By | Nov 12, 2009

Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934. His mother Kathleen Maddox was a 16-year-old unmarried mother. When he was born he was first known as ‘no name Maddox’. Then he was called Charles Miles Maddox and finally Charles Miles Manson. Kathleen Maddox was married for a time after his birth to William Manson.

This is the same Charles Manson, commonly known as Charlie who was convicted, along with other members of his “Family” for the Tate-LaBianca murders.

Manson’s youth was one of pure turmoil. His mother was always in trouble with the law and spent time in prison. Manson spent time with an aunt and uncle and at the age of 13 was placed in a foster home. From there he was involved in both juvenile and then adult crimes. By the time he was 32, when he was released from a second prison term on March 21, 1967, Manson had already spend more than half of his life in prison or other confinement institutions. At this time he considered prison his home and had requested to remain there.

Charlie was released at a time when the youth of America was looking for something. Many young women and men discovered Charlie and he became their leader. Some were convinced he was Jesus returned.

At the end of the summer of 1967 he began roaming the west coast with a caravan of followers. In the spring of 1968 they found themselves in the company of Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. And in August of 1968 Manson and his ‘Family’ moved to Spahn Ranch.

Since 1970 Charlie was been in prison. Today he turns 75. It’s been 40 years since the murders with his conviction being in 1971. His sentence was death. However that sentence was converted to life in prison when the California Supreme Court abolished the death penalty in the case State of California v. Robert Page Anderson. His next eligibility for parole occurs in 2012 although in all probability he will die in prison.
