Fame – I’m Gonna Live Forever

Irene Cara was a little known singer and actress when she starred as Coco Hernandez in the film that catapulted her to stardom, Fame. In the film she also sang the title song as well as Out Here on My Own. Both of these songs were nominated for the Oscar for Best Song. The first time in Academy history. Fame won.

She attended High School from Professional Children’s School in Manhattan which was a rival High School to LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, one of the schools that was the inspiration for the performing arts school in the movie.

Although there are online sources that says that she was born in 1959 Cara’s Web site says that she was born on March 18, 1962.

Three years after her success in Fame she recorded the title song to the film Flashdance. Flashdance…What A Feeling was co written by herself, Keith Forsey and Giorgio Moroder. The song was her biggest hit record also winning the Oscar for Best Song.

Along with the 1983 Academy Award for Best Song (Oscar) she through this song won 1984 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, 1984 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, Top Female Vocalist-Pop Singles, Black Contemporary Female Vocalist-Pop Singles, Top Pop Crossover Artist-Black Contemporary Singles, Pop Single of the Year, American Music Awards for Best R&B Female Artist and Best Pop Single of the Year.

Cara has been a performer for nearly her entire life. She began as a child singer and dancing on spanish television stations and for a year was on the PBS children’s series The Electric Company.
