Sonny & Cher’s Great Production

By | Mar 4, 2009

Forty years ago on March 4, 1969 the Pop Duo Sonny and Cher gave birth to their only child together, Chastity Bono. Shortly before her birth Cher had just completed the starring role in the film Chastity, written and produced by Sonny Bono. The film was a commercial failure.

While Sonny and Cher together only had the one child, Chastity was not the only child of Cher’s. She gave birth to a son Elijah Blue Allman born July 10, 1976 with her then husband Gregg Allman.

Sonny too had other children. He fathered a daughter, Christine born June 24, 1958, with his first wife Donna Rankin as well a son, Chesare Elan Bono born 1988 and a daughter, Chianna Marie Bono born 1991 with his last wife Mary. Mary Bono Mack is a member of Congress from California’s 45th district having completed Sonny Bono’s second term and winning reelection since.

Even after their divorce Sonny and Cher would perform together including two years on the Sonny and Cher Show and a performance on the Mike Douglas Show, a daytime talk/variety program, in the spring of 1979.

The last time the duo performed together was on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman in 1987 when they did an impromptu version of the song I Got You, Babe.

Sonny Bono would die as a result of a skiing accident on January 5, 1998. Cher, although being divorced for over 20 years, gave a tearful eulogy calling him “the most unforgettable character I’ve ever met.”
