No Longer One of the Top 2

By | Dec 29, 2008

For the first time since its release in 1977 the film Star Wars also known as Star Wars: A New Hope does not end the year as either the Number 1 or Number 2 grossing movie of all time in America. The Dark Knight starring Heath Ledger (and Christian Bale as Batman) now stands at Number 2 earning over 530 million dollars.

The Number 1 top grossing movie is 1997’s Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet which earned 600 million.

Two movies grossed over 300 million this year, Iron Man with 318 Million and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulll with 317 Million. Three others earned over 200 million. In all 24 movies have grossed over 100 million in the United States during 2008.

Even though Star Wars no longer sits at Number 2 grossing, if you adjust for inflation it still is there. Sitting just ahead of The Sound of Music and behind Gone With the Wind. Titanic is Number 6.

World Wide grosses paint a different story. Titanic is Number 1 with 1.8 billion with The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King at number 2 with 1.1 billion. The only other with earnings over 1 billion is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

I have always thought that determining the popularity of a film based on earning is not the correct way. It should be based upon number of ticket sold. Not knowing for certain I suspect that Gone With the Wind and Star Wars would be the top two.
