The Musical – In The Heights

By | Jun 16, 2008

It stems back to my senior year in High School. I needed to select one final class in my schedule. I decided to take a Drama Class and from there I’ve always had a fondness for the theater and like many others Broadway. I watched, along with many other theater lovers the Tony Award. But I have to admit I knew little of the Best Musical Winner, In The Heights.

In the Heights has been described as, “salsa and rap-flavored look at the Latino immigrant experience in Upper Manhattan”. It follows three days in the life of the Latino community of the Washington Heights.

Lin-Manuel Miranda began working on the musical while attending Wesleyan University. An earlier version there. Working with director Thomas Kail, it was reworked and came to the attention of producers Jill Furman, Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller. These producers had previously produced hits such as Rent and Avenue Q.

The musical began as an Off-Broadway production and moved to its current Broadway home at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on February 14, 2008 and celebrated its Opening Night on March 9, 2008.

The website for the production lists a 26 member cast, including its creator and Tony nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda. It includes a previous tony award winner, Priscilla Lopez along with Andrea Burns, Janet Dacal, Robin De Jesus, Olga Merediz (De Jesus and Merediz were nominated for Tony’s) and others.

When Lin-Manuel Miranda rapped his way through his acceptance speech, my first thought, other than he had throughly rehearsed it, was that he was disgracing the award. But on second thought, it might just have been the best acceptance speech of the evening.
