Mike Wallace

By | May 9, 2008

On May 9, 2008 CBS News Journalist Mike Wallace celebrates his 90th birthday. I wish him a very Happy Birthday.

Wallace has worked at CBS since the early 1960’s. During the years 1963-1966, he was the host of the CBS Morning News. It was similar to the Evening News airing at 10 am when it first debuted on September 2, 1963. In August of 1965 it was moved to 7 am with Wallace leaving the show when he became tired of daily early morning grind.

In the 50’s it was not uncommon for TV newsmen to also fill spots as announcers and game show hosts. Wallace appeared in a number of that type of shows, including The Big Surprise, Who’s the Boss? and Who Pays?. He was the host of the pilot show Nothing but the Truth which became To Tell the Truth.

Wallace early career actually wasn’t in news at all. In the 40’s and into the 50’s he was staff announcer for the CBS network. He was the announcer for a number of radio serials, Ned Jordan, Secret Agent, and The Green Hornet.

From 1957 to 1960 he did a show called The Mike Wallace Interview. The show featured interviews with many of the most prominent people of the late 1950’s. Shows from 1957 and 1958 have been archived by the Ransom Center at the University of Texas and can be seen here. http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/collections/film/holdings/wallace/

During his career working on 60 Minutes, Wallace has interviewed 100’s of people ranging from the famous to the infamous. And I along with the entire country wishes him a very Happy Birthday and many more.
