Early Stars in Playboy

By | Feb 18, 2008

It’s not that unusual to find a celebrity appearing on the cover or on the pages of Playboy magazine. Some have seen it and used it as a stepping stone in their career. But that has not always been the case. In the early days of the magazine it was rare to find a celebrity.

There were a few who did appear and one of them was Playboy’s very first Centerfold, and it sure didn’t hurt her career. It wasn’t by choice, she had posed for the pictures before her first film role, but no one would say that her pictures in Playboy hurt the career of Marilyn Monroe.

Many of those who posed during the early years of Playboy were photographer’s nude models and a few such as Marilyn Waltz and Janet Pilgrim graced the centerfold more than once. Both of these appeared three times. The only ones who have.

Jayne Manfield was a little known actress when she followed Bettie Page, Miss January 1955 to be the centerfold Miss in the February 1955 issue of Playboy. It helped her become one of new blonde bombshells, along with Monroe.  She would appear in the magazine three times before her untimely death in 1967.

Mamie Van Doren‘s career was on the decline when she appeared in Playboy in 1963. It was during this time that she was also promoting the film Three Nuts in Search of a Bolt. She was the least famous of the 3 “M’s”, Monroe, Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren.

Ursula Andress had appeared a few years earlier as the very first film Bond Girl and she was a star on the rise when in April 1965 pictures taken by John Derek, her husband, appeared in the magazine. In all she posed for Playboy 3 times.
