News – It’s All About Timing

By | Jan 31, 2008

There has been a lot things that have happened already in the early weeks of 2008 in the entertainment industry, but some of what at one time would have been the Top Story on the TV entertainment shows has nearly gone unseen.

On the week that the topic of conversation dealt with whether or not Britney Spears was going to show up at a court hearing, three women from the entertainment gave birth. On January 11, 2008 Nicole Richie gave birth to Harlow Winter Kate Madden, a 6 lbs. 7 oz. girl. On the same day Courtney Thorne-Smith gave birth to her first child, Jacob Emerson Fishman.

The next day was the happy delivery day for Christina Aguilera. She and her husband, Jordan Bratman, welcomed to the world Max Liron Bratman. All three of these births went pretty well unnoticed unless you were looking for them.

The same thing could be said about those who passed away during the first weeks of 2008. While there were many reports on the death of Suzanne Pleshette, Bobby Fischer and of course the unexpected early death of Heath Ledger.

Until I started looking at who passed away this January, I didn’t realize that British Novelist George MacDonald Fraser (Flashman series) died from cancer on January. Mystery author Edward D. Hoch died on January 17th the same day as Bobby Fischer and actor Allan Melvin.  Hoch was rarity since he made a living by mainly writing short stories.  He has had a new short story published monthly in the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, since May 1973.  I’m sure there’s a few in the waiting bin so that streak will continue for a few months.

A day later on the 18th saw the passing of actress Lois Nettleton, former wife of Jean Shepard, the man who wrote The Christmas Story. It’s just amazing at time to think that timing is important as to whether a birth or a death is front page or buried deep in the news.
